Ukraine and Nicaragua are countries in the midst of social and economic upheaval progressing on a difficult path towards stability. In these economically depressed countries, children and the elderly suffer the most.

Frontier Horizon’s mission is to alleviate some of this suffering. Our work includes a number of programs established to meet basic human needs, as well as to provide educational funding and job training for older orphan children.

Frontier Horizon’s Wishes program is one of many effective programs. Here’s how it works: As the winter holidays approach, churches, synagogues, schools, businesses, and individuals receive their individualized Wishes website or Wishes tags with an orphaned child’s name, age and orphanage location. Friends can donate online through that webpage or the tags are then placed on a holiday display. Individuals choose a child’s name from the display and are invited to make a $25.00-$50.00 contribution to Frontier Horizon to meet the needs of their sponsored child.

Each January, Frontier Horizon representatives travel to Ukraine and Nicaragua and take the children to the market place to buy their gifts. A portion of your contribution is spent on necessities for the children-clothing, shoes, and food, while the other part of your donation allows the children to select a new gift of their choice-a doll, Walkman, or toy. (We travel to large outdoor markets where the prices are so low that your contribution truly goes a long way.) The children excitedly anticipate this event each year! They are visibly ecstatic about the Wishes Program, and they are sincerely grateful for your generosity. Although the children are required to buy necessities, they are thrilled by the opportunity to pick out their own shoes or clothing themselves-something they never have the opportunity to do.

The need in Ukraine and Nicaragua is overwhelming and it is easy to get discouraged. The orphanages resemble large warehouses filled with children and orphanages are prevalent throughout the countries. In Ukraine alone, there are hundreds of children in each orphanage, and there are dozens of orphanages throughout each city; the same scenario is repeated throughout the orphanages in the cities and villages of Nicaragua. Over the years that Frontier Horizon has been working in both the Ukraine and Nicaragua, we have seen the power of the individual to make a difference in the life of another person.

We are often reminded of a poster showing countless individuals standing together facing the problems of the world asking themselves “What can one person do?” The answer is simple, yet profound: one person can help one other person. If every person in the world committed to this act of kindness, a lot of good would be done and a lot of people in need would be helped. Today is your opportunity to make a difference!
